I followed Heartsfield for years, back to when I was still in college. Then in 1980 I started playing with a band called Hotspurs, who's drummer briefly was still Stu Nevitt (he left shortly after I joined, but I have great memories of playing with him) and who's bass player was Dangerous Doug Mazique, God rest his soul, the greatest musician I ever had the pleasure of sharing a stage with. Then Perry and JC began "Heartsfield Relived", doing shows just the two of them and asked Hotspurs to be their backup band for some shows.I'm not sure I can describe the electricity and priviledge of playing with these guys, doing tunes I had heard them play so many times. We did some shows at the old Iron Rail and I got maybe the greatest compliment of all my years of playing - JC told me I reminded him of Phil (who was a personal hero). Well, it didn't last, but it was incredible. Some of my best musical memories, even after 20 more years of playing. "Lost Love" - some of the best guitar interplay ever. and those harmonies ...
