 We rescued this old boy, who is perhaps 10+ years old, from the Macon County Animal Control & Care Center this week. He came to the shelter about 8 weeks ago, found out in a rural wooded area, covered with fleas and ticks. He had chewed anywhere he could turn around and reach, trying to get rid himself of the parasites. He had incredibly long, curled toenails, which our vet said was a sign that he had lived most of his life in a cage.
He had one testicle that was so enlarged and distended that it hit the back of his leg when he walked. When he was neutered, the tissue was sent to pathology and the lab found three types of tumors. Luckily, the vet believes the tumors were localized. He has bad hips and cannot walk all that well, nor muster much more than a trot. He bit a kennel worker at the shelter who tried to push him back into his kennel, probably because she hurt his hip. That incident had him on ten-day rabies watch. After that animal control was reluctantly going to euthanize him, as now he couldn't be adopted. The thought of that was too much for us to bear, so he became our #4 dog. My wife has named him "Murphy". He will do just about anything for a cookie, including going into his kennel at night (he still has confinement "issues"). He is getting along okay with our other three dogs, and really likes our three cats. We know he does not have much time left in this world, but we thought he deserved a little time here to be a good dog and know he is loved.
