Well I may be getting a bit thin-skinned but it just seems to me that today's world has not gone to the dogs, it’s gone to “Who Let The Dogs Out.” Everywhere I turn lately the ugly sound and head of Hip Hop is permeating EVERYTHING!!
Bitch dis, Killaz dat, Hoe dis, WasZup wit dat shit, anyway does every word have to bastardized to be cool, hip and TODAY! I have 4 major problems with this music and the bullshit mystique that has made it grow like a creeping mold in our much less musical world. MAJOR PROBLEM #1 Poor poor me, I’m just a po’ drug dealer gangsta !!! Now I keep hearing the hate, the degrading of women, the preaching of violence, the call for destruction ramblings that are the meat of Hip Hop lyrics are just the poetry of the streets, a voice crying out of a shit situation that exists in the Artists (now that is a stretch) world. A world of out of control cops, poverty, diminished hope for positive change and generally the life in the pits of the belly of the bottom rungs of the capitalist ladder. That world does exist but not so darn much for Gangsta rapper, pimpin’ stealin’ dudes selling all the records. Plus the boring ass, pretty frickin’ none musical, mostly created by manipulating a bunch of damn machines (there is a whole industry in making and marketing machines made for folks who can’t play a darn note on an instrument) music that backs up the words are that way because these artist were on the streets poor and had no instruments nor the money to get them. BULLSHIT. 1st- I am sure when BB King, The Jackson Five, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, all the Hippie Band, Metal Bands, Liverpool Bands (an extremely poor part of England) on and on started out they had unlimited budgets for gear and doing their art, NOT NOT NOT. That’s a lame excuse for just not taking the time and effort to learn to play a musical instrument and creating music on it. All these great great artists and their great songs were the results of buying a crap guitar, drums, bass etc. and working with it 'til you got something better. And as it turns out many of those crap guitars are worth a whole lot now since the vintage instrument fad has blossomed. In my mind it’s gone way to far, a guitar that sounded like shit 40 years ago still sounds like shit today it just costs 100 times more. Anyway that’s fodder for a future neighborhood back to the current rant. 2nd from what I see these Gangsta dudes were drug dealers/criminals supposedly and in the “Ghetto” those are the guys with all the money !!! The Gangsta career was and is one of the most profitable “in the hood” employment choices probably just under pimpin’ but a step above armed frickin’ robbery. So how in the hell could these guys not have an instrument, hell they could just rob a music store or a local musician who did have gear. I mean they shoot and kill folks for Michael Jordan's / Shack sneakers or sports jackets, is there some kind of code that makes stealing musical gear a big no no? I get it, it’s all right to slap da bitch around, be a killa over a drug deal, heist car CD players, steal whatever the hell you want... BUT DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLUNDER ANYTHING THAT’S A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, that would be really really low, even for a low life gangsta. Don’t know about you but the ring of truth is missing here, they made up that music because they were too lazy to learn to sing play and practice with a real band, and they don’t like a lot of things namely Cops and Women. Shit one of the main instruments is a frickin’ TURNTABLE !! The too poor concept only applies to Eskimos making instruments out of seal skins or a tribal dude in the middle of the African jungle making a drum out of Zebra skin tied on with Gazelle guts to a burned out tree log. Not here in one of Capitalism's biggest game parks where if you are a Gangsta you don’t worry about buyin’ and savin’, just takin’. Maybe just holding off on 1 set of those $1000.00 spinning, light flashing hub caps could buy an instrument or two. Besides that, in my day when I sold drugs, I HAD MONEY, that’s why I did it, so if all these Gangsta Rapper/Hip Hop dudes in fact were the bad ass criminals they claimed to be they are lyin’ out da ass about this poor mouth shit. Not buying it.
MAJOR PROBLEM #2 “Where have all the singers gone?” Where are all the great singers that made those songs that all of us bought and loved so damn much. Songs you can sing today time after time, hear over and over. When I was a young musician the folks you looked up to as singers were all the black artists, those cats could sing !!!!!!! Let’s face it all our rock and roll hero’s couldn’t technically sing that well ala Neil Young, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan,Steve Earl, Sonny Bono, Tiny Tim, Grateful Dead then there were the better ones ala CSNY, Queen, Eagles, George Jones, Delbert McClinton, Linda Ronstadt , Hall and Oats etc. on to the technically best Barbara Streisand, Tom Jones, Celine Dion, Englelbert, etc. the best category was pretty lame. Then you had the Arthea Franklin's, Four Tops, Chi-Lites, Luther Vandroos, Smokey Robinson, Temptations, Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Earth Wind and Fire, on and on and on. Black singers were the cream of the vocal crop !! Combine that with musical grooves played on REAL instruments by REAL musicians and you had musical gold that stays on forever. How many folks are gonna look back fondly and emotionally while driving in their car just a singing away on a song about poppin’ a cap in some guys ass, bitch slappin’ a main squeeze hoe, being da bess killa in da frickin’ world !! It pisses me off that the great artist aren’t getting airplay, exposure on radio or TV and probably loosing a ton of work and rewards for their hard work. We are loosing a valuable part of American music. probably still being made but where do you hear it ? One problem with this is the Hip Hop crap knocking R&B / Soul Music out of the main stream is many many of the young folks today will never have been exposed to the treasure of those great musical styles because all you hear around you on TV, in the movies, on the radio, even in thousands of commercials in Hip Hop shit both the real deal and the watered down Wigger shit. Which brings me to..... MAJOR PROBLEM #3 “The Wiggeraztion of American media therefore the youth” If any of you are not all that up to date on this term Wigger like myself until recently it means a white n*gger. So now we have all this wiggerness in the marketing of everything as the new must do approach. You know what I mean, the Fast Food commercials with Hip Hop beats and some lame ass nicey nicey words, all smiley and happy. Makes me sick, if they are gonna use Hip Hop for marketing they should use the real stuff. example: A couple comes up to the counter to order food with that beat a goin’ and da low down hoe with the Gangsta bad ass has the balls to order first !! HE should reach over and bitch slap da hoe, and scream “Bitch u good fo booty and gettin’ me some Rum but damn get back in yo place I da MAN here and I’sss do da talkin.” Or the counter person says “sir the double cheese with extra everything will take 5 more minutes and he proudly proclaims “ I put a cap in your ass for dat, the sign says Fass Food and I’ll cut your disrespecting ass if it ain’t here fassta, now get to it punk, Ah Eyet ” Then there is the morning kids show where they have the exact quota number of kids to cover white, black, Oriental, latino, middle eastern, gay, cross dressers, reformed drug addicts, jocks, nerds, nice girls, hot girls and surfers. The show opens with the weak water downed hip hop beat thumpin’ away sort of and all the kids are doing rap !!!! Things like “ We are kids, we are happy, we were raised by a rich Pappy” “We dress cool, we dress expensive, so what if it costs our parents her pension!” “ We dance cool, we dance sassy, if your not like us your an assy.” Go down to the sto, Go down to the sto, Get down buy some mo, yeah Go down to the sto !!” It looks dumb, sounds dumb, has no value, is a disgrace to our down and out millionaire rap dudes and the deep seeded roots of rap/hip hop poetry. I guess the plus point of this wiggerazation is the manufactures of pant materials got a wind fall in profits because it takes 8 to 10 times more material to make all those tent sized, baggy legged, ass crack showin’ damn pants. And the sales of woofers for cars has sky rocketed along with I imagine, repairs for loosened trunk lids and rear windows. MAJOR PROBLEM #4 “Movies, actors and soundtracks" This is my last rant on this subject. How in the heck did these guys become actors? Ice-T, Ice Cube, Silkk the Shocker, Snoop Dog, Tupac Shakur, Q-Tip, LL Cool J, Mos Def,Jay-Z, Kool Moe Dee. Between all of them they can’t come close to any of the great black actors, not even in the same universe as: Denzel Washington, Leslie Snipes, Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover, Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, Cuba Gooding, Cuba Gooding Jr., Omar Epps. But there I am movie after movie at Blockbuster seeing releases with these names time after time. These guys are as bad as Adam Sandler, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Christopher Lambert, Keenu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren and Van Deisel!!! It’s just all part of the pop culture ravenous selling of crap!! It’s bad enough that I have to weed through all these horrible predictable boring movies but now it seems: Whenever there’s a shoot out, fist fight, car chase, confrontation of any sort we have to add to the sound track what? A Hip Hop Rap song !!!!! I have even seen it in movies with frickin’ knights, cowboy westerns and Science Fiction on other worlds far far away in the galaxy. Oh oh that reminds me if they are broadcasting sound waves out to the cosmos to other life forms are they now getting all this Hoe Bitch Slap garbage ? Two things can happen from that either they stay the hell away writing us off as too weird to bother with OR they rush on over and zap our ass trying to do pest control on the human race. The sound track thing has permeated TV commercials, TV shows, radio advertisement, movies and public bathroom back ground music. I can’t even *hit in peace, no where to get away from it I guess, it’s here to stay. And I thought it was a passing fad maybe 3 to 4 years but NOOO ! Well maybe I an old geezer lost in the past but I sure do miss the American Pop Culture having true diversity and a true creative sense, when music was about real hope and joy, when the variety of music on the air waves ran from Arthea Franklin to Jimmy Hendrix to Tom Jones to Buffalo Springfield to Temptations to The Beatles to Tiny (Frickin’) Tim !!! All in the top 10 or on the top 4O with Casey Kasem. So that’s it, see ya back at da hood, I’m off to bitch slap my woman, go out in the yard and pop a cap on some Killa Beez !!!!!!!! Or maybe bitch slap the next white suburbanite rich punk kid I see showing me gang signs, wearing them tent sized pants, talking da streetz lingo and over riding my new Johnnie Cash CD with the 5 mega ton woofer a poundin’ away next to me at the stop light. Ok Ok Ok I am a bit harsh and negative here, well sometimes it calls for that. I JUST WANT TO HEAR SOME GOOD R& B SINGIN TO A SONG WE CAN ALL REMEMBER DAMNIT !!!!! Keep On Smilin’
