| Live Recording: How It's Done |
|
Live Show On Gig Site I come in at sound check and set up with you, as you're doing your thing, I get levels adjust mic placement etc. all this is done with little interference of bands normal routine. The mike and direct sends are spilt before they hit the sound board, allowing us to record a full, fat signal not altered by your live sound mixer. Set up is surprisingly small and permits us to do our job without interfering with the flow of the show. During the show you run your normal set, get the folks involved and just have a fun gig getting that next release done. 16 trks. are recorded at the show with another 8 trks. available later for overdubs & fixes if needed. Typical fixes can be vocals, instrument replacement if needed that can be done at my home studio. Although I have done recording in other spaces see "At Your Space", this is by far the best way to record, the rooms are usually larger, P.A. further away and the energy level cookin'. Unless a lot of time & money is spent in the studio getting the sound of a band really jamming it out together, working the groove and the audience, the drive, vibe & freedom is hard to achieve. Most bands do not have the 8 to 20,000 it takes to make a fine studio recording. That's one of the reason low budget CD's can lack punch and energy & more than anything, the public reacts to the energy, drive, groove and the tune. With the work we put in on the post production phase, it's all in the power of a great mix. A well mixed and recorded live CD will represent what the band is really about, often better than a rushed low budget studio recording. Even a well recorded track can be ruined by a bad mix, I take a huge amount of care and pride in my mixing. Live Show At Your Space With some good planning, a great live recording can be done in the other spaces such as the bands rehearsal space, rented halls, rental commercial rehearsal space, barns, even a friendly club that may let you get in during the day, if the size & acoustics are adequate. Having a P.A. set up, even if it's a small one, is a must for the energy of a live performance, the main thing is the feel of rockin' it out as a band. Many places can work but we need to work together on the site quality before we proceed. One of the benefits of your location over a studio is "I come to you", scheduling many trips to the studio can be avoided and the comfort zone for the players is usually stronger. It can be a big time saver, time is spent recording not traveling, waiting around for your parts to come up etc.. Another is the time to get the recording done is far shorter and with less pressure than standard studio sessions. |
